Hushpuppies Recipe

Hushpuppies are cornmeal-filled deep-fried dough balls that taste like cornbread. This southern favourite is delicious!

– 1 1/2 cups fine grain cornmeal – ¾ cups all-purpose flour or gluten-free all-purpose flour – 1 teaspoon baking soda – 1 teaspoon paprika – 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes – 2 teaspoons salt – 3 tablespoons cane sugar or coconut sugar – 3 stalks green onion finely chopped – 1 cup buttermilk or cream – 2 eggs lightly beaten

Put all the dry ingredients in a big bowl and mix them together with a whisk.

Mix the dry ingredients together until they are well mixed. Then add the onion, buttermilk, and eggs.

About 3 to 4 cups of canola oil should be heated to 350 degrees in a pot.

Hand-roll a tablespoon of dough into balls. Carefully place the balls in the hot oil using a heat-resistant spoon. The oil should bubble and naturally encircle the hushpuppies.

This evenly cooks and crispy outside. In two minutes, it turns golden brown and crunchy. Only fry three or four with plenty of space between them.
